Carbo on Jean Beliveau; also, a strange video and a banana bread recipe

Habs icon Jean Beliveau passed away this week at the age of 83.  Guy did an interview with TSN Radio in which he talks about Beliveau's influence on his career.  You can find it here.

Here is a strange little video from RDS.  It's in French so I can't make heads or tails of what's going on, but Guy is dressed as a judge so it's certainly odd.  (If any of my Francophone readers would like to clue me in on what the video is about, it would be much appreciated.)  

And finally, here is something I meant to post long ago and just recently found again.  The recipe for Guy's favorite banana bread (from his wife Line) has surfaced on the Internet.  Here it is!

Photo flashback; plus Hall of Fame and alumni news

The Hockey Hall of Fame's induction weekend was held recently and Guy's former teammate Mike Modano was among the inductees.  Modano feels that Guy should next get the nod:

“Look at Guy Carbonneau — played a long time, won the Selke, won the Stanley Cup. "  (source)

As do Brett Hull, Ed Belfour, and Joe Nieuwendyk.  Hull is quoted here:

"I think at some point they've got to take a look at Guy Carbonneau and look at his body of work without the numbers and look at what he did as a defensive centerman and a leader and a Stanley Cup winner and numerous Selke awards," Hull said. "At some point, they've got to start putting some players like Guy Carbonneau into the Hall of Fame. So what, they don't have 500 goals. But without them, you don't win championships."  (source)

On to some alumni news now.  The CN Canadiens Alumni Challenge was held recently in Montreal.  This was the tenth edition of the challenge and it raised $398,555 (Canadian) for charity.  Guy played on a team coached by Guy Lafleur which also included Patrice Brisebois, Stephane Richer, and Chris Nilan.   The band Simple Plan gave an acoustic performance before the game.  (source)

The alumni team will be coming to Owen Sound, Ontario on January 17th to play a game which is being dubbed the "Habs vs. Hab-Nots."  Guy will be on the team.  The game takes place at 7:30 PM at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre, and benefits the United Way of Bruce Grey.  (source)

And finally, Guy will be taking part in a fantasy hockey camp this coming August.  The Kelly Chase Fantasy Hockey Camp will be held in Saskatoon at the Harold Latrace Arena from August 27 to 29. The cost starts at $2,500 and all proceeds go towards Saskatoon's Inner City Hockey Leagues and Saskatoon Children's Hospital.  (source)

"The team photographer at the time, Bob Fisher, was always ahead of his time, and he accompanied the team on a road trip to Hartford.  Back then, we were very comfortable with photographers.  Chris Nilan and I had been roommates on the road for a couple of years.  The night before games, we all had an 11:00 p.m. curfew.  That night, we got back to the hotel pretty early because, to be honest, there really isn't much to do in Hartford.  We were actually happy to be in our room.  To pass the time after the team dinner, we took a few funny pictures with Bob.  We knew they wouldn't end up anywhere...that is, until today!"

The Trade, 20 years on

It was twenty years ago today that the Montreal Canadiens traded Guy to the St. Louis Blues for Jim Montgomery.  Carbo would play one season in St. Louis before moving on to Dallas the following year, playing five seasons there and winning a third Stanley Cup.

Another case made for Carbo in the HHOF, among other things

On Monday, the Selection Committee of the Hockey Hall of Fame will meet to select the inductees for 2014.  Brian Costello of The Hockey News makes the case for Guy in the Hall of Fame, which is basically everything I've been saying all along.  Read what he has to say here.

And on July 11 in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Guy will be on hand for Hockey Fest, which includes a skills clinic for kids and an alumni game featuring former NHL and WHL all-stars.  Brenden Morrow, Guy's son-in-law, will also be in attendance.  Money raised at Hockey Fest will go to needy families who cannot afford the investment to put their kids in hockey.  (link)

Finally, an oldie (by a few months) but a goodie:  The Montreal Gazette commemorated the 30th anniversary of the Vendredi Saint brawl with this article, which includes a reprint of a 1993 article about the storied Battle of Quebec.

Happy birthday, Guy; also, Guy in Dallas for Modano's jersey retirement

Happiest of birthdays to Guy, who turns 54 today.  May you have a blessed day!

Carbo was in Dallas recently to take part in Mike Modano's jersey retirement ceremony.  Blog reader James was there and sends in this report.

This past weekend I had the opportunity to fly my family out to Dallas for the big Mike Modano jersey number retirement ceremony.  It was an unbelievable experience for us all with a few extra surprises along the way.  The big deal for me was getting to see Guy and his wife get out of a limo and walk the green carpet into the American Airlines Center for the event.  It took a lot of effort but in the end we got close enough that I got Carbo’s attention and asked if he would sign my jersey.  Now, Guy had been signing hats and programs all along the route but when he saw I was wearing a 99 cup worthy #21 sweater he was very pleased.  He smiled and said “all right” when I turned around to show him the back.  I usually don’t let anyone sign my stuff but since this was Guy and the jersey is not a gamer I decided to make an exception.

I just want to say that the whole evening was spectacular and something the Stars organization should be praised for.  It was first class all the way.  They brought in so many important people who in some way, large or small, made a contribution to the life and career of Mike Modano.  That list included most of the 1999 SC championship team and it was awesome to see them together again for the occasion.  Oh, and Lord Stanley’s Cup was there as well… pretty cool.  Guy didn’t have a speaking role in the ceremony but his presence was certainly noticed.  There were plenty of fans yelling out his name after he was announced.  On that note,  It was slightly embarrassing when my wife yelled out, “Guy, my husband loves you” in front of a few thousand people who all knew she was referring to me.  It’s cool though… and true I guess in a totally hockey bro sort of way.
